A mother-in-law hangs
laundry outside
in the garden,
the line stretching a promise
across earth,
early rhubarb unfurls
from knobs.
Spring licks
the woman’s sheets, cunning
almost cruel.
Here, take this sun,
take this wind,
make your bed shine
like polished bone.
